Build railroad routes, connect historic cities, and bring American history to life with this hands-on Rail Lines of the Civil War board game! Players collect matching railroad cards, claim routes across the map, and race to complete destination tickets connecting important Civil War locations. Every game brings new routes, challenges, and strategies, so no two rounds play out exactly the same. Perfect for families, homeschoolers, educators, and history-loving kids, this game is a fun way to explore Civil War history while practicing geography, planning, and strategy!

As kids connect cities like Gettysburg, Washington, D.C., Richmond, Atlanta, Vicksburg, and New Orleans, they'll discover how railroads, rivers, and other transportation routes played an important role during the American Civil War (1861–1865). They'll explore historic locations, build connections across the map, and learn how transportation helped move soldiers and supplies during the war.

How to Play:

  • Collect railroad cards in six different colors, choosing from face-up cards or the draw pile.
  • Use matching cards to claim railroad routes between cities on the game board. The longer the route, the more cards you'll need!
  • Place your game markers along the routes you claim and earn points for every railroad space.
  • Complete destination tickets by connecting two historic cities using your own railroad routes. Earn bonus points for every ticket you complete!
  • Plan carefully! Other players can claim the same routes, but you'll need to build your own connections to complete your tickets.
  • Keep building and connecting cities until the final round begins. The player with the most points wins!

What's Included:

  • Beautifully designed Civil War game board in two sizes: a 15 x 20 inch board you can print at a copy shop, or four 8.5 x 11 inch pages you can print at home and tape together (the home version has a few seams where the pages meet)
  • 28 destination ticket cards challenging players to connect pairs of historic cities and earn points
  • 144 railroad cards in SIX different colors (24 of each color) for collecting, matching, and claiming routes
  • Clearly marked key Civil War cities and additional connecting cities to help players navigate the map
  • Easy-to-follow instructions explaining how to set up, play, claim routes, complete destination tickets, and keep score

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What ages is this game best for?
    • The game is designed for ages 6 and up, but younger children can join in with adult help! The instructions include simplified rules that make it easier for younger players to collect cards, build routes, and complete destination tickets. Older children and adults can enjoy the added strategy of planning their connections and earning the most points.
  • How many people can play?
    • The game is designed for 2–6 players. Each player builds their own network of routes, collects destination tickets, and earns points. It's a fun option for siblings, families, homeschool groups, and classrooms!
  • Do players compete for the same railroad routes?
    • Yes, but there's a twist! More than one player can claim the same route. Each player must collect the required railroad cards and place their own markers along the route. That means no one gets completely blocked from connecting cities just because another player claimed a route first!
  • Do the railroad card colors have to match the colors on the map?
    • No! The six railroad card colors are used for matching cards in your hand. To claim a route, you need one railroad card for each railroad space, and all the cards must be the same color. The colors of the states and destination tickets do not affect which cards you can play.
  • How do destination tickets work?
    • Each destination ticket shows two historic cities and a point value. Your goal is to connect those cities using railroad routes you've claimed with your own markers. You can travel through other cities along the way, and the same routes can help you complete more than one ticket. Completed tickets earn points, while unfinished tickets subtract points at the end of the regular game.
  • Is this game historically accurate?
    • The game features real cities and locations connected to the American Civil War. Railroads were essential for transporting soldiers, weapons, food, and supplies, but not every connection on the board represents an actual railroad that existed during the war. Some routes represent travel by roads, rivers, or other means of transportation. The map has been simplified to create an engaging, playable game while introducing children to important Civil War geography and history.
  • How do I print and assemble the game?
    • The game board comes in two sizes: a 15 x 20 inch board you can print at a copy shop like FedEx or Office Depot, or four 8.5 x 11 inch pages you can print at home and tape together. The home version has a few seams, but plays exactly the same! Print and cut out the railroad cards and destination tickets (cardstock works great!), then gather 30 small markers per player, plus paper and a pencil for scoring. Laminating is optional, and you're ready to play!
  • Can I laminate the cards and game board?
    • Absolutely! Laminating the railroad cards, destination tickets, and game board is a great way to make everything more durable for repeated play. You can also store the cards and markers in small bags or containers to keep the pieces organized.
  • Do I need anything extra to play?
    • You'll need 30 game markers per player, with each player using a different color or type, plus paper and a pencil to keep score. Small candies, buttons, or colored paper squares work great as markers. No dice are needed!
  • Is this a physical product?
    • No, this is a digital download. You will receive a PDF you can print at home. No physical product will be shipped.
